Florencia Sarmiento

Maria Florencia Sarmiento is a policy analyst with the Economic Law and Policy Program. She specializes in international economic law and investment arbitration.

Before joining IISD, Florencia was an independent consultant on trade and investment. She has worked with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development's (UNCTAD's) Section on International Investment Agreements, contributing to the team’s research publications and providing technical assistance to government officials and investment policy-makers.

Florencia has also worked as a researcher at the University of Geneva, the Graduate Institute, and the Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment on projects related to trade, international commercial, and investment arbitration. In addition, she has closely supported the World Trade Organization (WTO) mission of a Latin American country in Geneva on issues related to investment facilitation.

Florencia has academic experience as a teaching assistant for the interdisciplinary master programs (MINT) at the Graduate Institute. She holds an LL.M. in international dispute settlement (MIDS) and is currently completing her doctoral thesis in international law at the Graduate Institute. She is fluent in English, French, and Spanish, with conversational knowledge of Italian and basic knowledge of Greek. She is based in Geneva, Switzerland.
