Kulthoum Motsumi
Associate
Kulthoum Motsumi is an associate with IISD's Agriculture Program. She holds a Master of Science in applied environmental science from the University of Botswana and is currently pursuing her PhD in climate adaptation governance from the University of Cape Town in South Africa. Her areas of focus are gender mainstreaming, climate change and adaptation, biodiversity conservation, rural livelihoods, and natural resource management.
Kulthoum has held many different positions, including sustainable development program manager for Southern Africa with the Heinrich Böll Foundation Southern Africa, coordinator for the Africa Adaptation Initiative (AAI), managing director for environmental research and policy solutions (ERPS) in Botswana, and natural resources management specialist with the Aqualogic Consulting firm in Botswana.
She has an extensive consulting background in the fields of climate adaptation, climate finance, gender mainstreaming, natural resource management, policy analysis, and social impact assessment. She served as a member of the Adaptation Committee under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), representing 54 African countries.
Kulthoum is a contributing author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Africa chapter on adaptation finance for Africa and has numerous publications relating to climate finance, climate change, and gender in the context of Africa.
She speaks English, KiSwahili, Setswana, and Shona, and is learning French.
